We all have great memories of Holi. Few things which comes to my mind are- great fun , friendship, diversity, new perspective about life…readiness to march in new year with high energy. (in many parts of India and world new year begins just after or before holi (month of march. So March ahead)
What is Holi?
‘Holi’ celebrated in India, meaning to offer oblation or prayer to the Almighty as Thanksgiving for good harvest. It has traditionally been celebrated in high spirit without any distinction of cast, creed, color, race, status or sex. It is one occasion when sprinkling colored powder (‘gulal’) or colored water on each other breaks all barriers of discrimination so that everyone looks the same and universal brotherhood is reaffirmed.
As Sri Sri says:
Holi is a festival of colors. This whole world is so colorful. Just like nature there are different colors associated with our feelings and emotions: anger with red, jealousy with green, vibrancy and happiness with yellow, love with pink, vastness with blue, peace with white, sacrifice with saffron and knowledge with violet. Each person is a fountain of colors which keep changing.
~In ignorance, emotions are a bother; in knowledge, the same emotions add colour. Like Holi, life should be colourful, not boring. When each color is seen clearly, it is colorful. When all the colors get mixed, you end up with black. So also in life, we play different roles. Each role and emotion needs to be clearly defined. Emotional confusion creates problems. When you are a father, you have to play the part of a father. You can’t be a father at office. When you mix the roles in your life, you start making mistakes. Whatever role you play in life, give yourself fully to it. Harmony in diversity makes life vibrant, joyful and more colorful.
PS: Use of toxic and dangerous colors, criminal waste of water etc can make holi unproductive experience and loose the real significance. Let’s celebrate holi with non toxic colors, flowers, fun and as signified above.
Only colors & no dyes….
Only fun & no worries….
I remember one marathi poem by Suresh Bhat:
रंगुनी रंगात साऱ्या रंग माझा वेगळा !
गुंतुनी गुंत्यात साऱ्या पाय माझा मोकळा !
कोण जाणे कोठुनी ह्या सावल्या आल्या पुढे;
मी असा की लागती ह्या सावल्यांच्याही झळा !
राहती माझ्यासवे ही आसवे गीतांपरी;

Mahashivaratri is auspicious day celebrated widely in India. Please read bellow compiled article about Mahashivaratri. This will give you good insight into know abouts and how to celebrate shivaratri. This has deep connection to our daily life. Todays day is special for reflecting on our own self, celebration, happiness and meditation.
Knowledge about Mahashivaratri from Sri Sri Ravishakar
Shiva is not any person sitting in some hill, kailas hill, he is not that. What does Kailas mean? Kailas – ‘Las’ means what, where there is celebration, happiness. Where there is a festive atmosphere. Where there is frolicsomeness / intoxication. Where there is celebration and only celebration. That is Kailas. Vaikunth is where there is nothing short. Kunth – is shortage. Vaikunth is where there is shortage of nothing. Where there is only celebration that is kailas. So, Shiv ji is seated in such kailas. Aatma only is Shiva.
If you meditate on shivaratri then the power of meditation is 100 times more, it is said like that. At least do it on that day, it’s okay if you don’t do it on other days, at least do it one day. It’s said for the sake of saying. So that which is always(nitya) and which is (shashwat), that is shiva tattva. It’s said beautiful in that shloka:
Shivaratri is the day of Lord Shiva. Shiva is the lord of meditation and therefore the lord of awakening. Shiva Tatva means to be awakened. Shivratri is thus an occasion to awaken one’s self from all sorts of slumber. Shivaratri is not a night to be slept over. One should try and be up through the night. It signifies being aware of everything you have and being grateful about it. Be grateful for the happiness which leads to growth, and also for sadness which gives a depth to life. This is the right way of observing Shivaratri.
For the pious, the following method of Shiva worship is advisable – sit down in lotus posture, do some Pranayam to stabilize your breath, then indulge in Dhyana, followed by chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya”. It is the greatest mantra and the devout should drown himself in its Kirtan. Shivaratri worship leads to fulfillment of a devotee’s wishes.
There are certain days and time frames in a year that enhance one’s mental and spiritual faculties. In such times, whatever one wishes, materializes. Shivaratri is one such day. All this is very scientific. Going to temples on this day is OK but you should remember that Shiva is everywhere.
The meaning of Kailasa (legendary abode of Shiva in Himalayas) is celebration. So where there is happiness and celebration, Shiva is present. Whether in Sanyasa or Sansara, you can’t escape Shiva. Feeling his presence all the time is the essence of Shivaratri. That is the real Sanyasa. No worship is complete without offering something to the deity. Shiva is a very simple lord, he is innocent – Bholanath. One just needs to offer bel-patra to him. But in this simplicity is a deep message. Bel-patra offerings signify the surrender of all three aspects of one’s nature -Tamas, Rajas and Sattva. You have to surrender the positives and negatives of your life to Shiva and become carefree! The greatest offering is your self. To offer one’s self is the key to happiness in life. After all, why do you get sad? It is mainly because you are not able to achieve something in life. At such times you should surrender everything to the all knowing God. The greatest power is in surrender to the divine. It’s like a drop owning the ocean. If a drop remains separate, it will perish. But when it becomes the ocean, it is eternal!
Your true nature is Shiva. And Shiva is peace, infinity, beauty and the non-dual One. Ratri means “to take refuge.” Shivaratri is taking refuge in Shiva.
Shivam, Shantam, Advaitam: Shiva means your very Self your innermost core, the purest Self. Shanta is quiet, peaceful, very innocent. Advaita is non-dual, only One. So, Shiva means good, benevolent, Ratri means that which gives rest, takes you into its lap and comfort. Night is always comforting, all activities have stopped, everything is quiet, peaceful, environment becomes quiet, body gets tired, goes to sleep. Shivaratri — a rest which is so deep. When the mind rests with the Divine, that is the real rest, only in the Divine lap.
Any meditation we do on this day has a manifold effect, for this is the day when spirit touches the earth.
The first sound when creation manifested was Om. The second sound was So Hum. The third sound was Om Namah Shivaya.
By chanting Om Namah Shivaya, it is said that one gets rid of all the sins. Even if one has never chanted the Om Namah Shivaya mantra, it is worth just listening to it and soaking in it. It is called Mantra Snanam (bathing in Mantra). It elevates the consciousness.
Q: Guruji (Sri Sri), please tell something about shiva tattva and what is the importance of mahashivaratri?
A: Shiva tattva is something that is total, complete. If you see Shiv ji then, he is sitting in meditation, immersed in meditation and also doing tandav. You won’t find this completeness in any other form or gods and goddesses. He is sitting in meditation, peacefully and also doing dance, shiva-tandav. There is innocence and he is having the knowledge of three lokas (trilok gyani), he is a guru also. He is a beggar as well as eshwar, master of everyone. Is it possible that one can be both – master of everybody and beggar at the same time. We can find this in only Shiva tattva. That’s why he is called ‘Har’ – (jo har ek mein hain) one who is there in each and everyone. (jo har jage hota hain woh har hain) – one who is present in every place. Har means everything. Who is pervading every place, who is there in everyone, in all forms.
It’s said in the Upanishad:
“Shivam shantam, advaitam, chaturtam, mannyante sa aatma sa vigyeya.” Shiva is, shanta – which is quite, advait – which is non-dual, there is no other of it; chaturth – which is the fourth state – it’s not awake, nor dreaming or nor sleeping (sushupti). It’s not sleep, not dream nor awakened state. That which is beyond these three is called “Shiva avastha”. When you are in meditation, you are in what state? Tell me. Are you awake? You are not sleeping and you are not dreaming also. But there is something pleasant. That fourth state is called shiva avastha, shiva tattva. Shivam, shantam, advaitam, chaturtam, fourth state, it’s auspicious state; manyante sa atma sa vigyeya – that is atma and you are that, we have to get known to it, it’s the only thing to be known. After knowing that, then you say – “Shivoham Shivoham”. The person who says “aham aham” that is “me, me”, when that person melts after going inside him, then he stops saying ‘I, I’ and says “Shivoham Shivoham”. So I am Shiva. Shiva is me. The ever new existence (satta) of the consciousness that is shiva satta. You start experiencing that. After experiencing also, you should sit quite. It’s not that once you experience shiva tattva, then you should start roaming with a trishul. Then you have some mental problem. Keep the experience in your heart, keep it there only. With your own mind if you start saying shivoham shivoham, put bhasma and start roaming around by putting a snake around your neck and holding a trishul – no. The significance of snake is, that it is the wakeful state. Shiv ji is sitting with eyes closed. One may feel he is sleeping. No. How is he from inside – like a snake, wakeful, the consciousness is wakeful, fully awake. The snake gives the message of wakeful consciousness.
And some days, some special days, the experience of shiva tattva is very easy. Like on purnima and amavasya, the mood of mind fluctuates as the moon waxes or wanes. Does it happen or not. It’s said that the mental diseases increase during purnima and amavsya in mental hospitals. So in the same way, on pradosh, or Mondays the wakeful state of Shiva tattva is more, it is said like that, it’s a recognition.
“Namami shamishaan nirvana rupam, vibhum vyapakam brahma veda swaroopam.”
Which is in the form of veda, means in form of knowledge; vibhum vyapakam – that is all pervading. So it is said it is nija also, nirgun also, sagun also, all gunas are there in it, everything is there. After saying this then they say “you can’t describe it, now keep quiet. How much will you talk? How much will you describe?” “Chidakasham akasha vasi…” That ‘chid’ chaitanya also, how is it? It’s not a flame or not any object also. It’s the chidakash, it’s the sky. It’s pervading all the chidakash. It’s the form of chidakash. Akashvat. That’s why shivji is always painted blue in picture. It’s not that he was blue colour, it means blue like the sky. And moon on the head, and how is the jata like whole digambar all the digmandal is the jata. There, moon is also inside him. Everything is inside him. So all the ghosts, dead, devil, everything was included in his gana. Nothing was left out of him. It’s not possible also. They say that Shivaji’s procession. All types of people are there. So in this world, there are all types of people, all belong to that supreme soul. There is no one else here. It’s said “Sarvam shivamayam jagat”. This whole world is Shivamaya.
The soul of Krishna is Shiva. When shiva tattva took the form of body and became Krishna. That’s why it is said that, when the Gita was given, Shivaji had given. Means, staying in Shiva tattva, Krishna had given the message of Gita. That time he didn’t give Gita while doing raas-leela. He didn’t give it while playing, but that time being in his own self, in his vishwa rupa he gave. So there’s not a little bit of difference between Shiva and Krishna. The difference is imaginary. Krishna was a historical personality. Shiva tattva – Shiva never came on this earth. But Krisha came, stayed and then went. That’s the difference. In Krishna, shiva tattva took a physical body and in shiva tattva there is no body.
Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are called vibhutis, so if there is no person here, then what is the relation?
Shakti hai vyakti nahin. These are three forms of omkar. That’s why it is said ‘Ek Omkar’. Everything comes in one omkar. Three different qualities of one parmatma are called as Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. In our body there is place of Brahma – below abdomen, Vishnu – middle portion, Mahesh – head region. The reproductive organs are situated in stomach and below. From the naval to throat – is the place of Vishnu, all organs for sustaining the body and Shiva tattva is above on the head. Any devastation, destruction happens by head only. And also any transformation happens by head only. The strength (shakti) of shiva is called as Devi shakti. Shiva tattva can’t stay without shakti.

Lets go deep within and celebrate self today.

“If you are aware, if you are open, if your heart is open, you’ll see that every moment you can live in the knowledge—no matter what you are doing. You don’t have to have to get away from all this and sit in some corner, on some mountain, in some monastery somewhere. No, no! You can be doing your work, be on your job, do all that you want to do and yet maintain that inner awareness. ” SSRS
I experience this so much every moment…Everything we do is meditation, sadhana, yoga. In fact every act or life itself becomes expression of yoga, sadhana, meditation . You take some time out for that everyday – that is good.. necessary in the beginning for discipline and for the body..but after while everything you do is part of it…You don’t do something you are part of it..You don’t love..you are love itself..
You don’t have any restriction, it’s so much open that you don’t have choice but to live knowledge each moment. And you can experience this in whatever you do whichever field you work, research business, service, corporate, job , student …
Know that you are already special and free…this very moment ..you don’t have to wait for years and years to get enlightened. It takes only a moment for that shift to happen and yes you are there. I feel lucky to realize and live this each moment and want to share this with everyone.
Life is just unlimited joy , each breath is so special , we are moving in the sea of energy. Sometime it might be just that moment you are down and with some negative thought but it’s not you…Its just that moment you have that layer of that thought ,some stress or emotion here and there .. Once you see beyond that, you are so beautiful..everyone of us is so beautiful ..unique..masterpiece (masters piece)
One more one line from my friend Prabhu: Foolish people live for the moment; Coolish people live in the moment.

What is love? Is it some emotion, sensation, feeling, attachment, sex, relationship, pain? Is it a sensation that magically generates when Mr. or Ms. Right appears?
How can we express love?
Love is not an emotion! It is your very Existence!! It is the most basic need of life.
It is the origin of life, and also the goal of life. Seeking for love brings freedom, comfort, peace, also all the problems in life comes because of love too… In love ordinary things become extraordinary.
We are made up of substance called LOVE…There is nothing but just love…My Life, my breath is my valentine.. Everyone wants nothing but love in some or other form.. may it be relationship, respect, money, fame ..some or other form of love. If you have everything in material world but no love..Is it of any use. No. Right ?
Love has no completion… because it is infinity. It doesn’t have any boundaries. You can also never express love fully through words, feelings, expressions. You may try but is will not be complete. It is inexpressible. So do not questions or doubt love…just let it be.
Let love be. Don’t give it a name. When you give it a name it becomes a relationship, and relationship restricts love. Love is your nature. And because love is your very nature, you cannot but love.
The ability to receive genuine love comes with the ability to give love. Love and authority are totally opposite values yet they co-exist. ..(Subtler )
As Fromm puts it in his book “The Art of Loving” : The full answer lies in the achievement of interpersonal union, the most powerful striving in man. It is the most fundamental passion; it is the force which keeps the human race together… Without love humanity could not exist for a day.
We must lose our self, in order to gain our self. What we must lose is our selfishness, our self-centeredness. We must lose the ego, in order gain the soul.
When there is a conflict between love and truth, love always wins, that is why spouses lie .
Some Quotes :
“Seeing God in the person next to you is love. And seeing god in yourself is meditation.” Sri Sri
“The visible sign of utter love is an undying smile.” Sri Sri
“Let love be. Do not give it a name.” Sri Sri
“Love is that phenomenon of total letting go.” Sri Sri
“Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.” Mark Twain

- When you find the lone nut doing something great..have the guts to be the first person to stand up and join in.
- Leadership is often over-glorified.
- It is first follower who converted lone nut into movement.
Sharing one interesting QnA from Bawa.
Q:What are the qualities of a healthy romantic relationship?
Bawa: The first thing: for a healthy relationship, both people must be focused on something bigger than themselves. Your boyfriend or girlfriend can’t be your focus. If you’re focused on each other, the relationship breaks. The second thing: you need to give and take. Give generously and take graciously. If you only give and don’t take, the other person will feel obligated. Just look at romantic movies. When they are focused on each other they die in the end. Like Romeo and Juliet. But, in Indiana Jones, he was focused on getting the stone. There was a girl, but she was just there.
Q: Comment about attraction, desire and entanglement. How can we avoid entanglement?
Sri Sri: You are the source of energy. Attraction happens when the energy on you wakes up. It is just electro-magnetic energy. One energy manifests at various points in the body (the seven chakras) as different flavours, different colours. When attraction gets satisfied very quickly, then love does not blossom in life. When attraction is difficult to attain, it turns into love; and when that love matures, it becomes unconditional, it turns into dedication or devotion, the ultimate.
Love and longing go together. If there is no longing, if u kill the longing, then love also slowly dies way. How can you keep the longing alive? By being centered, by being in yourself. Do not get completely lost in the other person, this becomes too much for the other person as well. Getting lost in the other person is called entanglement. If two lines run parallel, with some goal ahead, they will always be parallel, but if they focus only on one another, they will meet, cross and go in opposite directions! So, with attraction, you come together, meet and then separate; but if there is a goal, then the attraction remains forever. That’s why, in life, your charm is never lost when are well-founded and centered, when your attention is on the knowledge.
Love has no completion… because it is infinity. Something which has no boundary also has no completion. Radha is the longing, and Krishna is the love. Sometimes, the longing brings pain. To avoid the pain, you try to fill your space with something, but that pain makes you deep.

Notes from talks by Sri Sri Ravishankar :
“The wise are happy with what they have and happy with what they don’t have. Fools are unhappy with what they have and what they don’t have. Misery is not given by anyone or anything in life. It is your own mind which makes you miserable or happy and uplifted.
If you are absolutely content with what you have there is no aspiration in life. It is important to have aspirations but if you are feverish about your aspirations, that itself becomes an impediment. If a cup is held under a tap that is running at full force that cup will never be full. Run the tap water at the right speed and the cup fills up. This is what happens with people who are too ambitious or feverish. Just have the intention, “This is what I want” — and let go.
Your whole life, every breath you take is a form of worship. Worship means loving with regard and honour. Adoration alone is not worship. Adoration is loving a person because of certain qualities they have. The truth is always simple and it permeates the simplest forms of creation. Know the change and see the non-change. Know that which is changing and you suddenly become alive; with this you can overcome inertia or death. The changing universe charms you by lifting you away from death; the unchanging universe gives you a glimpse of immortality. “
Sign of Life is enthusiasm and sign of Success is smile.
I am working for about 15 or more hrs a day for last couple of days along with other activities (volunteering etc ) and then too never felt dull, lack of energy and still charged for party , sports or doing 108 Sun salutations. I find myself joyful, ever fresh and enthusiastic. I can feel the energy vibrations each moment. I was just pondering over that and thought about the sources of enthusiasm. Usually in life there will be certain moments, certain things which will keep us High on life, which will bring spark to life to your presence. Those will be the time when you will be in your SELF (touch your being) and that moment will take away all the dullness, boredom, any negativeness. It will flood you with lots of energy, enthusiasm.
And I bet you can be high on life every moment. (Without Alcohol…which keeps you high for some time, them makes you completely drained for more time)…Here once you touch the high you can maintain it forever. (I mean with breathing techniques like Pranayams, Sudershan Kriya).
Just to start with let’s think about the sources of energy. There are four sources of energy – food, sleep, breath, and calm /clear state of mind or meditation.
Food: Always eat food with high Prana/energy. Vegetarian food is the best. Eat the food which makes you fresher than the food which will make you dull (oily, sweeter, deserts, meat). Just I want to quote one rule of thumb which I follow from Aurveda. Don’t eat anything for 3 hrs after you eat anything (i.e. Eat whatever you can digest in 3 hrs) and don’t be hungry for more than 6 hrs.
Next Sleep: better if you can take for 6-7 hrs. More or less will make you feel dull again.
Breathing is very important; without breath, there is no value for our bodies. MOST IMPORTANT.
A few minutes of deep meditation gives so much energy.
Following are few secrets of maintaining your enthusiasm, dynamism, keenness of mind and well-being :
- Breathing:Breathing is life force of life. It s the most important source of energy. Anyways we take breath till the last moment. Better be aware of it and understand it. I feel energized with every incoming breath. Breathing techniques like pranayama channelizes the life force energy in our body. We all float in a sea of prana (life-force energy).
- Meditation: Meditation gives complete rest and enthusiasm. More the peaceful we inside are we become more dynamic outside. Inner Peace = Outer Dynamism (IPOD). Few minutes of meditation gives me so much of energy. For being dynamic enthusiastic first you have to be at complete rest at home. It’s like deeper the foundation of building taller it can go. It is said that 20 minutes of deep meditation is equivalent of 4 hrs of sleep.
- Physical Exercise/Yoga /Gym: It will flush your system to liveliness. Everyone must have experienced this. Yoga stretches removes the toxins in your body. So take time out jog, stretch and do some yoga.
- Creativity : Notice that whenever you do something creative, new, not routine; you feel enthusiastic lively completely in present moment. So be creative and do something new every day. Creativity brings a new beginning for “time”. When you are creative, you break the monotony of time. Everything becomes fresh and alive. Creativity brings along with it a new round of enthusiasm. When you are enthusiastic you are closer to the creative principle of existence. Deep silence is the mother of creativity. No creativity can come out of one who is too busy, worried, over-ambitious or lethargic. Balanced activity, rest and yoga can kindle skills and creativity in you.
- Reading inspirational quotes, stories, blogs, articles… When you are upset, sad and you read some inspiration book/article you start feeling good. Something happens inside you. You start feeling good and get courage to do something. Knowledge is great source of energy. It can motivate you and generate enthusiasm.
- Being with Loved ones: you feel more relaxed, calm and yet uplifted more enthusiastic.
- Challenges: Challenge yourself everyday. A challenge take away boredom caused by monotonous tasks and keeps you pumped up.
- Service, Stretch helping hand: Observe how you feel when you help somebody. It is help to others but more than that see how feels. When service is expression of your joy, love it brings lots of enthusiasm, energy and can never tire you. “If you are unhappy, go out and serve. You will become happy…Unhappiness comes when you sit and think about yourself and brood about yourself and worry about yourself. The candle is burning for you, you don’t have to do anything. The sun is shining for you, there is nothing to do. You have to be grateful, sit below it and serve. Be in love. It’s as simple as that.” – SSRS
- Music of Life: Your favorite music track running, favorite drink (for me its water) in hand, perfect weather…how does it make you feel? More energetic more enthusiastic. Right! Music unites all our hearts. Like music is the rhythm of the sound, the harmony in the sound, life also has to move in harmony. When all the different aspects of life are harmonized, life becomes music. Otherwise, it is noise!
- Let it go: Process of letting go is amazing. It is 3 step process. Breath in, Hold and let go. Take energy from the cosmos with each breath in (and there is lot of it …unlimited). With each breath out let go off all the worries, stresses, negative thoughts. The moment you let it go you are free and full of energy.
- Be 100% : In present moment. Right now right here. (Thoughtless mind, heart full of love n hands always busy).
- In the presence of more energetic, enthusiastic person.
- Deep Rest: There is one saying in Chinese which says: If nothing works , you are confused just go and sleep. Take deep rest, go for vacation etc. This will recharge you.
The above things keep recahrging battery of my life. Do comment and share the things that keeps you energetic and enthusiastic.
Our nature is joy, and enthusiasm. However sometimes it gets clouded but it can never go. Our consciousness is ‘nitya-nutan’ (ever fresh). This is with us forever.
Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy
Become one whose enthusiasm never dies, come what may.
When Buddha got enlightened on that full moon day in the month of May, it is said that he maintained silence for the whole week. He did not say a word.. Mythology says that all the angels in the heaven were frightened. They knew that it was only once in a millennium that someone blossoms like Buddha. Now he was silent! The angels then requested him to say something. He said, “Those who know, they know even without my saying and those who do not know, will not know even if I say something. Any description of light to a blind man is of no use. There is no point in talking to those who have not tasted the ambrosia of life, and therefore I am silent.
How can you convey something so intimate and personal? Words cannot. And as many scriptures in the past have declared words end where truth begins.”
The angels said, “What you say is right. But consider those who are on the borderline, who are neither fully enlightened nor totally ignorant.( Refer The way to get rid of the obstacles – SriSri ) For them, a few words will give a push, for their sake you speak and every word of yours will create that silence.”
The purpose of words is to create silence. If words create more noise, then they have not reached their goal. Buddha’s words would definitely create silence, because Buddha is the manifestation of silence. Silence is the source of life and is the cure for diseases. When people are angry, they maintain silence. First they shout and then comes the silence. When one is sad, they ask to be left alone and retreat into silence. Similarly, silence is the recourse one takes to if ashamed. If one is wise too, there’s silence.
When Jesus was asked, “Are you the son of God?” he kept silent; it was the wisest thing to do. When you are telling someone you have a pain in the leg and they want you to prove it, how is that possible?
When you cannot prove something as deep as pain how can you prove something like enlightenment or divinity? Joy and fulfillment bring silence while desire brings noise.
Look at the noise in your mind. What is it about? More money? More fame? More recognition? Fulfillment? Relationship? The noise is about something; silence is about nothing. Silence is the basis; noise is the surface.
From the very beginning Buddha lived a very satisfied life. Any pleasure was at his feet the moment he wanted it. One day he said, “I would like to go and see what the world is.”
He started thinking when he saw someone who was sick, someone who was old and someone who was dying. These three instances were good enough to bring in him the knowledge that there is misery. When he saw someone sick, he said, “enough! I have experienced it.” Just one glimpse of an old man and a corpse was enough Buddha said, “there is no joy in life; I am dead already! There is no meaning in life. Let me go back.”
Buddha set out in quest of truth, all by himself, leaving his palace, wife and son.
Stronger the silence, powerful will be the questions that arise from such a silence.
Nothing could stop him. He knew he wouldn’t be able to get away during day, so he quietly escaped at night and his search continued for several years. He did all that people told him to do, he went from place to place, fasted, and he walked many paths, before discovering four truths.
1 : “There is misery (Dukha) in the world.”
In life, there are only two possibilities: one is to observe the world around us and know from others’ suffering and futile exercises,
the second is experience it and find that it is misery.
There is no third possibility. If you are sensitive, you don’t need to go through all that yourself. You can look at those who are suffering and become wise.
2 : The second truth is, “There is a cause for misery.” You can be happy without a reason. Joy does not need a reason, laughter does not need a joke but misery has a cause.
3 : The third truth is, “It is possible to eliminate misery.”
4 : The fourth truth is, “There is a path to be out of misery.”
Following the four truths, he gives the eight-fold path of right equanimity, right vision, right silence, right meditation etc. Buddha also said that the three things to do are Sheela, which means conduct, Samadhi, which means an equanimous meditative state, and Pragya, which means awareness.
Buddha was born at a very interesting time in India’s history, at a time when India was prosperous and had reached its height in philosophical thinking. In a highly intellectual society, people think they know it all, but in fact, they have not known at all. This was the case in India. So Buddha said, “Come, I have a simple technique for you. Keep your concepts to yourself, but just come and sit.” Then Buddha gave them four steps.
1 : Observe the body (Kayaanu Paschana)
2 : Observe the sensations (Vedananu Paschana)
3 : Observe the flow of mind (Chittanu Paschana)
4 : Observe your true nature (Dhammanu Paschana)
So, Buddha spoke and taught for years. Thousands would sit still, observe and meditate and become free. Buddha would not indulge in any philosophic discussion.
I think it is mandatory for every psychologist to study Buddha! . Buddha has propounded all that there is to know about the mind and its functions in such a methodical manner.
Mind is noise; the source of the mind is silence. That’s why Buddha said, “no mind”. He was referring to the chain of thoughts that simply wander in the mind all the time.
At a time when there was so much prosperity, Buddha gave a begging bowl to his main disciples and asked them to go and beg! He made kings take off their royal robes and take a bowl in their hand! Not that they were in need of food but he wanted to teach them the lesson of becoming ‘nobody’ from being ‘somebody’. You are nobody; you are insignificant in this Universe. When kings and geniuses of that time were asked to beg, they became embodiments of compassion.
Observe your true nature. What is your true nature? It is peace, compassion, love, friendliness and joy and it is silence that gives birth to all this.. Silence swallows the sadness, guilt, and misery and gives birth to joy, compassion and love. Buddha came to take away the misery, the guilt, the fear, the arrogance, the ignorance, and bring back wisdom, strength, beauty, knowledge and peace.
